In a collaboration with Parley for Oceans, the ocean activist collective, Adidas has just release fifty pairs of sustainable sneakers composed of more than 16 discarded plastic bottles and 13 grams of gill nets. Limited by the arduous task of collecting the discarded items and then spinning it into a fiber suitable for athletic shoes, Adidas was challenged not by the bottle recycling (which is commonplace), but rather by nettings’ tough fibres and the difficulty of removing the fish smell. The process requires the netting be ground into a powder before being repurposed into a manufacturing material.

Parley partners with small countries affected my marine pollution and collects the environmentally damaging materials; areas such as the Maldives, Grenada, and Jamaica, for example. The organization provides team members to help fisheries and other ocean locations clean up as well as introduce them to better ways of using plastic in their businesses. Parley then distributes the collected materials to companies such as Adidas, that then use the materials in manufacturing.
